As a chronic illness blogger, I occasionally have the opportunity to try out new products in my never-ending search to manage the pain and constant fatigue that accompany my diagnosis of cervical dystonia. I received this product as a gift to review by the Chronic Illness Bloggers network. All opinions in this review are my own and I was not influenced in any way by the company.
The Gupta Programme is a new treatment possibility for those who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or ME, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, Adrenal Fatigue, Lyme Disease and other related conditions.
I’ve struggled on and off with adrenal fatigue for years before my dystonia diagnosis in 2010. Then about three years ago I came down with mononucleosis (a little late in life!) It took me a couple of months to get over the worst of it, but I’m convinced I have occasional little flares in the form of debilitating fatigue and sore throat.
The Gupta Program was developed by Ashok Gupta, who also suffered from ME/CVS before he was able to cure himself, conducted research into the brain neurology of the illness mentioned above. He concluded that the root of these conditions lie in abnormalities of the brain, particularly the amygdala defined as one of the four basal ganglia in each cerebral hemisphere that is part of the limbic system (source Merriam-Webster)
Interestingly, dystonia is thought to be caused by abnormalities in the basal ganglia that regulate movement.
Ongoing studies in neuroplasticity show that the brain is re-wireable and that improvement is possible for the conditions mentioned above. The Gupta Programme is one way to re-wire the brain’s faulty responses to restore health.
I received a workbook, a set of DVDS as well as a floor map that is a great visual and kinesthetic tool to help to apply the retraining principles of the program. There’s a helpful app that you can use for meditation practice called the Meaning of Life Experiment (anyone can use this.) Additionally, I received access to weekly web meetings with Dr. Gupta, who stated that these web meetings were the core of the program and that the other materials were secondary materials.
The heart of amygdala retraining is learning how to stop the ongoing loop of negative thinking and emotions that many of us struggle with. Your body feels bad and your mind follows suit. It’s a vicious cycle for many. I’ve really struggled with anxiety since my dystonia diagnosis because of the dread of having to function as a mother with the magnitude of the pain that I’m in. It definitely takes a conscious effort to learn to calm myself and redirect my thoughts.
Mr. Gupta is very genuine and enthusiastic about this program. His care and concern for his audience is genuine and shows in his weekly webinars. However, I really struggled with implementing all facets of the program. A big reason for this was that I already had existing faith, prayer, meditation and yoga and 12 step recovery practices that I wasn’t willing to put to the side for the duration of this program so it got to be a lot for me. I also really struggle with brain fog on some days when I just can’t take in any more information!
However, Mr. Gupta was very reassuring about this and encouraged us just to do what we could to the best of our ability and that’s what I did.
I completely understand and agree with his research and theories, but I think there are many ways to achieve this rewiring. This program can definitely be a beneficial tool in the arsenal of a person living with chronic illness, but it should be understood that the Gupta Programme is a big commitment of time which might be quite doable for a single person with a lot of down time, but as a mom of children with special needs I got a little overwhelmed with it all.
I follow Mr. Gupta on social media and find his self care prompts to be very helpful as I continue to learn how to live with my condition. If the rest of my life ever slows down I’ll go back and revisit it. Dystonia symptoms are definitely triggered by stress and negative thinking and it requires daily spiritual and physical maintenance on my part so as not to become consumed by it all. Physically, I’m far better than I was in 2010 but am not cured.
